The university where I work has formed a partnership with a local museum, we are essentially taking over management of the entire thing.
I work in University Relations and besides being a web developer, maintain the publications network; updates, installs, backup, etc. Part of our challenge is integrating a photographer, designer and writer. And with that their image catalog/archive.
Now as far as we've discerned thus far, they have numerous images of the collection but no system for backing that catalog up or tagging it with meta data, etc.
So the good news is I'm starting from scratch essentially. Up to this point we've archived all our photos/jobs in extensis portfolio for easy access - those catalogs specify which cd/dvd the files reside on. It's a pretty simple setup but has worked for us up to this point.
Now I'm looking for solutions that would be able to handle a much larger catalog as well as be accessible on campus and remotely (some of the curatorial staff will need access).
Besides an xserve, portfolio server and terrabytes of drives what are my options?
The biggest complications seem to be the remote access and size of the images we'll be archiving. Besides shooting raw, some items in the collection are huge pieces.
I appreciate any advice you can offer - Thanks!
