University Web Developers

Below is an e-mail from Lance Merker, the President/CEO of OmniUpdate with a proposal for this site. Given this is a community site, it's only appropriate that the members decide on this proposal. Please provide your feedback by this Friday (May 16).

We at OmniUpdate would like to give a free coffee mug with the University Web Developers emblem to all 700+ subscribers of the ning group. The proposition in simple. We would like to replace the google ads on the right side of the page with the attached banner. The banner (and the free mug offer) would remain for one year. We'll pay all the costs to remove the google ads, and pay for the mugs and shipping to members who request one during the year.

That's it. We won't replace the banner with any advertising nor put our advertising on the mugs!

Members of the group get a symbol of their association with the social network -- hopefully building some camaraderie and group spirit -- and we get brand recognition from the sponsorship.

Regards,

Lance

Good point! What are they going to do with our addresses???
hi gang
The ads are there anyway, so having them be OmniUpdate ads specifically really makes no difference. Will the mugs be shipped to us free? or is it one of those -- ''FREE but you pay $12.95 for shipping and handling''?
:)

Cool. Now I can stop drinking coffee out of my purse.
Can you PLEASE post video of you drinking coffee out of your purse?
that sounds amusing!
:)
I like free stuff as much as the next guy, but isn't this sort of the equivalent of vendors spamming the mailing list? I realize we have ads anyway, but at least the Google ads are from a multitude of sources, rather than a single vendor. Giving one vendor exclusive access to our membership strikes me as wrong.

Now if they upped their offer to, say, a free Porsche with the uwebd logo, I might change my mind. :-)
Sounds good to me. It will look nice sitting next to my WordPress mug :-)
Looks like a good idea to me, though I might need an IV for my coffee rather than a mug. Plus, the banner is related to who we are / what we do.
I would say that there isn't really a problem with it in my opinion. Other CMS's advertise with edu related sites (see dotCMS and eduStyle). OmniUpdate is reputable as well. Though, I might weigh the value of giving them exclusive access to a container for a full year vs. some kind of rotation with other companies, should others want to take advantage of such an offer.
I suppose someone could interpret this as our endorsing their product but since we're the the only ones in here and we know better, I'm fine with this. Beats limo ads!
No, I don't like the idea - unless that area is going to be made available to other vendors as well. I'm not influenced by a coffee mug!
Sounds good to me too.
Sure, I'd say lets do it.. it provides a way to distribute the ad revenue to the community in a practical way. I'm assuming you weren't going to send me a check for a portion of the adsense revenue, so great.. send me a mug I'm all for it.
