Below is an e-mail from Lance Merker, the President/CEO of OmniUpdate with a proposal for this site. Given this is a community site, it's only appropriate that the members decide on this proposal. Please provide your feedback by this Friday (May 16).
We at OmniUpdate would like to give a free coffee mug with the University Web Developers emblem to all 700+ subscribers of the ning group. The proposition in simple. We would like to replace the google ads on the right side of the page with the attached banner. The banner (and the free mug offer) would remain for one year. We'll pay all the costs to remove the google ads, and pay for the mugs and shipping to members who request one during the year.
That's it. We won't replace the banner with any advertising nor put our advertising on the mugs!
Members of the group get a symbol of their association with the social network -- hopefully building some camaraderie and group spirit -- and we get brand recognition from the sponsorship.
Sure, I'd say lets do it.. it provides a way to distribute the ad revenue to the community in a practical way. I'm assuming you weren't going to send me a check for a portion of the adsense revenue, so great.. send me a mug I'm all for it.
As long as the only thing OmniUpdate does with my address is send a mug, fine. If they don't offer a way to opt out of future non-coffee-container mail, I'm opposed.
I'm not really that interested. I have tons of coffee cups and such, and one more won't make much of a difference. However, the ads changing might be alright. But I don't want it to be a stepping stone for ad calls and junk mail in my box. Don't mind the occasional post card.
I avoid US based servers for personal information, and try to keep all PII on-campus or at least on Canadian servers. The requesting IP number in GA data could be personally identifying in some cases, but I'm not very concerned.

Oh oh... it would be very helpful to know what % of mobile phones are Web accessible.. with a data plan. Based on that information, marketing to/with the device would change considerably.
