Below is an e-mail from Lance Merker, the President/CEO of OmniUpdate with a proposal for this site. Given this is a community site, it's only appropriate that the members decide on this proposal. Please provide your feedback by this Friday (May 16).

We at OmniUpdate would like to give a free coffee mug with the University Web Developers emblem to all 700+ subscribers of the ning group. The proposition in simple. We would like to replace the google ads on the right side of the page with the attached banner. The banner (and the free mug offer) would remain for one year. We'll pay all the costs to remove the google ads, and pay for the mugs and shipping to members who request one during the year.

That's it. We won't replace the banner with any advertising nor put our advertising on the mugs!

Members of the group get a symbol of their association with the social network -- hopefully building some camaraderie and group spirit -- and we get brand recognition from the sponsorship.

Regards,

Lance

Sounds good to me!
Mug me.
This is a way better deal for OmniUpdate than it is for any of us:

$240 ($20/month X 12 months) + cost of sending mugs to a few people buys them a year of exclusive ads to 750 influential people in their target demographic, and, potentially, physical addresses to send product literature to. Pretty good return on investment, Lance Merker.

Even though this deal wouldn't have any real impact on the way the site works, it still annoys me a little. My personal feeling is that this site doesn't need commercial sponsorship, and doesn't need to give one company the mindset that they "own" it. And I don't need another coffee mug.
Ning will likely head toward advertising sooner rather than later (and no coffee mugs for us!). I read this article in Fast Company:

http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/125/nings-infinite-ambition.html

Thought it was an interesting article in its own right, but also found it relevant given our clear stake here at Ning...

All said, I'm for the ad + free mug. Online ads, as long as they don't blink, don't seem to bother me...
I'm late in chiming in - just got back from vacation - but it seems pretty shortsighted to jump at this just for a free mug. If we are going to sell advertising space, there are a lot more questions to be asked.
Totally agree!
I vote for the proposal. Good move on the part of OmniUpdate, and I'd love to add to my coffee cup collection!
Sounds fine to me! The mug will be a great reminder to check in with the uwebd site.
I'm for it.
Sounds good... free mugs never hurt either
Fine with me. :)
The price is right!

Office Reservation software

I've been tasked with finding a software tool that helps manage the onboarding and exit process of new and departing faculty. Ultimately i would like this software to management faculty office interms of when resources can be removed from a particular office and when a new faculty member can be moved in with the necessary resources. This tool should have notifications and alerts so there are no conflicts with someone being removed from a office and someone being placed in a office. Does anyone…See More
