Has anyone ever been to Web Directions North?

I'm looking for a conference to go to. I can't do eduWeb, I've already been to Highedweb, just looking for something different.

They haven't posted any plans for a 2009 conference but I assume they eventually will.....or at least I hope....

Does anyone have any experiences to share?

Hi Barb,

I attended Web Directions North 2008, and HighEdWebDev in 2006. The two are quite different experiences but, IMHO, both very worthwhile in their own rights.

The one thing I really liked about HighEdWebDev is the chance to meet and share experiences with other "web professionals" who face the same challenges as I do in my day-to-day work. It's been almost two years since I was there and I have yet to attend any other gathering where I've met so many other people who I can so easily and immediately relate to on a professional level.

Now if you're more into the "high ed" half of being a "high ed web professional", you might find that some of the presentations at WDN are covering things that you may not relate to or won't be able to immediately use in your day-to-day work. But at the same time, it's also refreshing to hear the experiences or listen to advice from other people making a living off the web in very different worlds.

WDN will give you quite a different feel as most, if not all, of the presenters are from "industry". If you like that aspect of the web, e.g. you like reading up on trends, follow the blogs of leaders in the field, like hearing from entrepreneurs or VP's from start-ups, aren't totally sick of "web 2.0" etc - then you'll probably really enjoy WDN -- I definitely did.

The lineup from this past year was excellent, filled with a number of people who would probably be considered pioneers or leaders in their fields. You'll also be surrounded by a lot more folks who are buzzing with new ideas, starting up new ventures, trying to build business connections -- it does have that web start-up feel to it with lots of energy and excitement.

As far as conferences go, it was also well-organized, they kept us well fed, there was nice schwag, and they had a trip to Whistler tacked in on the end for folks looking for a little fun.

Adrian
Hey, thanks for the break down. I think I might just be sticking with HighEdWebDev after all....

Barb Iannucci replied to Eloine Chapman's discussion Should we migrate to https?
"Yep, I got the same messages. Some of our sites use SSL and we've been talking about migrating all the rest our sites for a while now. I suspect we will be doing it rather than just talking about it sooner rather than later now. :\"

Should we migrate to https?

I recently got a notice from Google that in October 2017 Chrome V62 with show the warning "NOT SECURE" on all our web pages we have a input field for search. Since on most of our pages there is nothing that would require secure information I've never felt the need for HTTPS. Our class registration pages are secure but not the general information pages. The warning is going to scare people though. Are others upgrading their websites?See More
