I just read Seth Meranda's blog post and it got me to thinking that there are prob quite a few higher ed people that could follow each other on there.

So what is your twitter name?

Yikes, guess I never added myself to this (probably because I hate answering Matt's questions):

Genevieve,
You are ZIPLINE! I so didn't put the two together. That helps SO much knowing that.

I'm not very active, as I mainly use Facebook, but if I had a bigger following, I'd probably start using it for Status more than FB.

Paul,
You should check out ping.fm. I wrote a post about it way back. It allows you to send status updates to twitter, facebook, etc. Should do exactly what you are talking about w/out any extra work.

I totally don't recommend that. I have different social groups in the different social networks, and use each platform so differently. Facebook is more of my personal/social side, where Twitter is mostly professional stuff. Rarely would I want the same status in both places.

I recommend it. There have been more than a few moments when I've needed to send messages across all my networks, so ping.fm is perfect for that. And I can selectively publish to certain networks while not publishing to others.

I don't think I'd use it as an every day broadcasting system, but it's a nice tool to have in the box.

You've brought up an excellent point. The more your personal and professional lives are intertwined -- think, say, Howard Rheingold ;) -- the less the separation is necessary. When more separate, keeping channels distinct is important, whether through different tools, or through different accounts (such as Mac OS X with multiple users and different accounts for, say, personal and professional (new) Twitter accounts.)

I think the beauty of these simple systems is that they meet needs, whatever they are.

As long as I can select and aggregate, either by post or by stream, I'm happy.

Oh, and I've found this as well. In fact, our main competitor has copied everything I've done in the past six months or so. Quite exasperating.

I started using it for our college a couple of months ago and find it handy for last-minute announcements and updates on events, etc. We are adding about half a dozen people a week and I've only lost two followers. It's more experimental than anything right now, though. I considered using it personally, but I just don't have a reason to yet.

Oh oh... it would be very helpful to know what % of mobile phones are Web accessible.. with a data plan. Based on that information, marketing to/with the device would change considerably.
