I am responsible for the university website at Oklahoma Christian University.
I am also a graduate student at the university, studying for my MBA (Master of Business Administration). As part of a self-guided study, I have decided to do a short write-up on the ethical issues involved in managing a university’s reputation online.
I thought it might be beneficial, to me and to all of you, to involve the UWEBD community in this discussion.
So, here is the first issue that I am curious to hear your responses to:
- Under what circumstances do you think it would be ethical to remove comments made about your university in social networking situations (ie. Facebook Pages, YouTube, MySpace, Ning, your university blogs)?
- Under what circumstances do you think it would be unethical?
- Is there a difference between what you would do on “your turf” (sites belonging to your institution) and what you would do on broader social networks?
- If you don't remove negative comments and opinions, what other options are available to deal with these situations that are more acceptable?
