University Web Developers

Hello all!

I'm creating a social media portal page for the Emory website, but several folks are concerned about using the logos of the various social media companies (YouTube, FB, Twitter, Delicious, etc). They are brining up copyright concerns, wondering if we might have to go to each and ask for permission to use/alter their logo into a set of uniform icons.

The options are to:
1. Use a set of existing social media icons to help create a unified look to the page, however the it is not known if the companies have given permission for their logos to be altered

2. Create our own set of icons, but would we have to get permission from each to alter them?

3. Use the standard logos for each site in an unaltered form

How have you all handled the addition of social media icons to your university web pages? I've seen it everywhere, from Texas A&M to WVa to UVA to Cornell. Any copyright concerns come up?

These numbers have gone up quite a bit since the original research. Safe to say that at least 25% of 4-year universities and colleges in the states have a social media icon on their site.
For us there are no concerns. It's just like linking to someone else's website. They consider it a good thing.
It is a good thing, however there are links such as in Facebook where they actually give you the link and specifically ask that the icon "not" be altered.

I wouldn't make a mountain out of a molehill— think of it like your own edu's logo. There are certain colors and type that make it your logo. You wouldn't want someone inverting the colors, or stretching it, etc.

For our site, I created a "Join us on facebook" button:

Nobody from facebook is going to have a problem with that. Now, if I changed the color to orange and used Brush Script, they'd be annoyed (if they ever saw it) and even if they did, what are the ramifications? Are they going to haul a university in to federal court over a button to prove they were in some way damaged...?

There is nothing to be concerned about here.
Hello all!

I just got a reply from my contact at YouTube, who passed along a set of 'Watch on YouTube' icons, but gave us free reign to come up with something else, saying he'd be happy to run it by his brand team (though that didn't seem like an essential step).

I hope that is this information can put my colleagues concerns to rest!
