Hi, a couple of people have suggested that we create a separate FB page for new and potential freshers starting in 2010, but last year I just created a few headings on our discussion boards and let the new students run riot on those. My thoughts were that creating a new page or group for freshers would dilute our message a little and I would rather keep them on our main corporate one. What do other peple think, is it counter-productive to create a new group/page for this purpose?

Cheers, Tom

I agree with using a page where you have the largest amount of momentum and influence and if you have had success with getting them to use the Discussions tab that, I feel, is the best place for their interaction. In my institution we have considered creating these pages based on grad year to create a community for those graduating in the same year throughout their four years and then be able to target that page as alumni and form an alumni chapter from it. Our hesitation
in this was sheer volume after several years of creating these pages...
Tom,
I would recommend creating a "Class of xxxx" site for your incoming freshman. As Katie mentions, this gives the class an affinity with each other and helps build networks before they even reach campus. Once they arrive and get in the swing of things, the site can be turned over to the class and the alumni office.
Thank you both - I have created a new group as an offshoot of our main one called 'Freshers 2010' and within 5 minutes I have 15 members and discussions taking place already!
Thanks again for your time
We've had a lot of success using FB pages for our admitted students ... we use student ambassadors to monitor and respond to the discussions. A few years back we used the group feature in our Luminis portal - that worked for a bit. But really, we think meeting them where they (already) are has been the most successful.

Susan - you can get a vanity URL for that page at http://facebook.com/username. Something like http://facebook.com/WM2014 would be much, much easier to promote at events and on mailings! :)
