We are redesigning our .edu website and are looking at ways to measure success. We are looking to define which metrics we will use to determine success and increased performance of our site. What metrics do you use to measure the success of your web efforts?

I'm not going to begin to suggest I'm a good source for information on this, because I'm currently trying to figure out success as well, but I'd suggest:

  • Goal conversions: online applications, info requests, contact request forms completed;
  • Figure out what your call-to-actions are going to be and track those;
  • Look at traffic and engagement on key pages (admission procedures, accepted student procedures, annual fund, etc).

EXTERNAL METRICS

Google Page Rank of your uni home page

Alexa Traffic Rank + Quantcast + Compete

Majestic SEO number of external backlinks + ahrefs number of incoming links

INTERNAL METRICS

Number of unique visitors

Time spent on key pages
