University Web Developers

I was asked by our alumni director today if we had the capability of creating an online yearbook (the university I work for stopped publishing them in 1994).  As most of you may be able to relate, my staff is limited (just me and a web developer), and honestly I have no time to put this sort of thing together.

Have any of you ever created an online yearbook through other applications or vendors?  I've found a few options online, but wasn't sure if there is something inexpensive (would love to see something free) or at least do-able on a very VERY tight budget. More than anything, I want students to be able to populate this on their own, and then provide an end product to the students online, that is password-protected.

Any info you might be able to share would be most appreciated-- applications you've used, which universities you feel do a good job at this, any pitfalls to avoid, etc.

Thanks!
Dana

Hi Dana, one of my buddies works for http://www.myyearbook.com/. Not sure if this is what you're looking for but it is the #1 free online yearbook out there.
Thanks, Paul, but that's not quite what I'm looking for... thinking more along the lines of a do-it-yourself package (like mixbook or snapfish) and just hosting the final product on our website-- we are not interested in publishing hard copies of this.
Good question Dana!

I've been kicking around this for a decade. In 1997 I had a meeting with the President of Taylor publishing and was encouraging him to develop an online yearbook. He was more interested in getting his digital printers working!

Then about 5 years ago I me with the alumni director at SUNY Cobelskill and 20 others from various departments on campus on the same thing. The alumni director loved the printed yearbook as a way of finding out what groups and organizations people were in so they could reconnect them to events and fundraising needs. At the time we were developing alumni online communities and were exploring how we could offer this. I've attached notes from that meeting that you might find interesting. Keep in mind this was in 2005 just as Facebook was beginning.

Today, we are encouraging colleges to use Fan pages as their online yearbook. If every group and organization coordinated their pages, we could develop a Facebook App that tied them all together. I've attached a white paper that discusses the opportunity if you'd like to review it.

I would be interested in brainstorming with you about this concept. We envision an application that would enable an alum 6 years from now to search on the clubs and organizations they were in, to see scores, photos, videos, stats and comments made. It would be like stepping back to the actual day to re live the experience!

All the best,

Don
