Photo Permissions

We are required to get written permission from students to use their photos on our website and in our publications. Does anyone have a different policy for student photos and do you get permission to post photos on social media sites such as Facebook?

Our new web directory product will enable the logged-in community to view photos of others. They also have the option to opt-in to having their photo be publicly viewable.

I would suggest the release form include "any and all media" so you are not limited and do not have to track what you have permission for with each photo.

Our students sign a form when enrolling that says something along the lines of "I give the university permission to use my image or likeness in any and all material." It is the students responsibility, before the a picture is taken, to say they don't want it used. This way we don't have to worry about which students we can and cannot photograph.

If our students have a privacy form on file, then we are required to ask them if we can use their photos. Otherwise, we follow journalism procedures - ie., if they are in a public place, at a public event, we don't have to obtain permission. If we are creating a brochure or something, the students we photograph are aware of it; but, since this is a public institution, unless they ask for privacy, we don't have to worry about it. They are informed of this when they enroll.
