I have recently been asked to evaluate the Datatel Active Campus system (which runs on Microsoft's SharePoint Server).

I was wondering if any of you have been requested to do the same at your institution(s), and what information you compiled (feature set comparisons, user adoption trends, usability studies, cost comparisons, implementation process comparisons, etc.).

I know...I'm not asking for much, am I? hehe...

Hi Dean,

I think some folks here at the University of Bridgeport would also be very interested in web parts and your experience, if you have a free moment and are willing to share.

We are scheduled to get a proof of concept up in March, and launch the full portal in the fall. I would also be extremely appreciative of any advice you might have regarding web parts.

Perhaps we could start a group of ActiveCampus schools on uwebd, or perhaps a private Google group?

Hi Dan:
Shawn and I have talked with a a few folks at your school (I think Matanya, Lori, and Robert were some who we spoke with). There was talk about possibly setting up another conference call when you were a bit further along in the project. Feel free to email me to set something up.

We launched Datatel's ActiveCampus Portal summer 2009. We use the campus news, campus events and announcements features extensively. We also use the WebAdvisor WebPart to provide self-service access to registration, course schedules, advising, time entry, and department budget information. We occasionally experience problems loading the webadvisor application in the portal, manifested as a "spinning circle" (loading) icon. We are not certain is this is a licensing issue or what. We are a very small staff, had no prior .Net experience, and find Sharepoint to be quite a behemoth. I would not recommend this portal product to a small staff.
Hi Carolyn:
Which version of Active Campus are you using? How many active portal accounts do you have?
I would also be interested, Carolyn, in hearing more about your implementation.

I have ordered and have begun some extensive studying on the SharePoint Server 2007 environment to try to be ready as our ActiveCampus Portal goes online later this year, and Datatel has already begun the installation process in our test environment.

We'll be doing some extensive single-sign-on work with the ForeFront server as well to try to eliminate the need for our staff, faculty and students to deal with so many separate logins.

To that end, we have even begun moving away from both Novell (our current datacenter's infrastructure) and Google Apps Ed. Edition (our current Student Email System), in favor of a Microsoft datacenter infrastructure and the Microsoft Live@EDU email system (this will make integration of our internal systems so much simpler with the SharePoint/Portal environment).

Due to our small staff, simplification of the administrative functions is HUGE for us, and we are fairly certain we've got a potential winner here regarding integration once all that is done (we hope).

And DEAN...I am still VERY interested in talking to you and your colleagues more about your customized web parts. Tracy Hokanson (Datatel) mentioned your customization at our kickoff meeting in February when she and Cheryl Cline were here on-campus getting us ready to begin this massive project.

Thanks again Carolyn & Dean and to all who have commented on this question of mine...

I would be very interested in starting up an online collaboration about the ActiveCampus Portal environment, and share challenges, victories, etc. with each other to make all of our lives easier!

- Justin
Hi Justin:
If you are going to be in the office next week, send me an email and I'll see if we can set up a conference call.

I will be at a conference from Sunday - Thursday, but I'll be in the office all day on Friday, so I'll email you before then.

Thanks, Dean!
