At the Stamats Integrated Marketing Technology conference (#stamats09) yesterday, several of us were discussing various components of our job descriptions for student social media interns in our offices. I'd like to create something new for next semester myself, and many at the conference said they'd love to see what others have done.

If you have a description that you think has served your office well, would you mind sharing it here for others?

Thanks in advance! :)

I also would like to hear what people think. I've found in the past 2 years that the best people I have hired are ones I have recruited. I'm becoming a social media headhunter. :) Find people who do it well, then go get them. Of course that isn't always possible and one day my luck will run out, so I'd love to hear from people with experience.

I dont know if its served me well - its only been a few months - but I have only a short descriptive 'graph that I used.

This position allows a student the ability to help promote and shape the university online community experience. By providing daily interaction with others, answering questions and providing content this assistant will gain a greater understanding of the marketing applications of communities while learning about the varied social and academic offerings provided by Suffolk University offices and departments.

Ideal candidates will possess in depth knowledge and strong demonstrable experience with Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, and understand the intersecting capabilities of each. They will be self motivated, outgoing and prepared to professionally interact with others on behalf of the university.

Main Tasks:

Work with the Director to fulfill social media posting and interaction requests. Fulfill requests for uploading photographs and videos. Work with the Director of Web Communication to prepare text, print, and other goods for the promotion of Suffolk’s social networks. Be an active and visible presence at Suffolk events, Tweeting live, taking pictures and video, interacting with students and preparing final editorial, pictorial and video of each.

I also modified this for a video position.

Here was mine (with a hearty assist from Jessica Krywosa of Suffolk University):

This position will allow a student the opportunity to help shape and promote online and social media community experiences for the college. The social media intern serves as an online ambassador particularly to prospective student audiences. Will involve representing institution on such platforms as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other emerging social-media spaces.

... and yes, it's already drawing a lot of interest!

We're working on this with a school right now. I'll share what we end up at!

It's not for our school, but it is a pretty decent description of a social media intern position:

I'm using a version of PHPLive I've been customizing for the past few years. Although I've used the meebome widget before too. The nice thing about it is that if no one is online to answer the chat it prompts them to leave a message.

Our library staff initiated adding live chat and have had a good success with it. Now the admissions folks are interested in doing something similar. The real challenge is, of course, people managing the responses. The technology is fairly straigh...
