Ning's latest release includes providing Twitter-like status updates on profile pages. (See http://blog.ning.com/2009/09/tonights-release-is-live-9.html and http://blog.ning.com/2009/09/status-feature-coming-soon-to-your-nin...).

These status updates have the potential to be included in the latest activity RSS feed. My question for the group is do you want these included? I'm not sure how many of you rely on the feed to keep up with the activity on the site, but this has the potential to dramatically change the the volume.

Also, are there other things I can do to help you keep up with the activity on the site?

It would be fun to play with. Looking at all my other nings to see about this! Thanks for the heads-up!

I think it might be nice to try this out, though I don't know how much more I'll post personal status updates directly on Ning. It looks like the site feeds are separated out, so if the status updates are in their own feed, that is fine with me. This discussion page has three feeds now, and it looks like the homepage has seven separate feeds (who knew??). I say let's try it out.

On a related note, I'm not sure it's a great idea for them to sell the feature with "here's what I had for lunch" updates, that much reviled Twitter stereotype.

Assuming it can always be turned back off I say go for it.

It seems like it's worth a try.

Can you tie these status updates to Twitter?

I don't see why not. I'm curious if Ning would instead concentrate on a mobile platform for the iPhone etc. that could provide richer content entrees.

Oh oh... it would be very helpful to know what % of mobile phones are Web accessible.. with a data plan. Based on that information, marketing to/with the device would change considerably.
