Today Ning announced that they will be eliminating their free service via a post on the Network Creators site. Here is a excerpt from the post:

We will phase out our free service.  Existing free networks will have the opportunity to either convert to paying for premium services, or transition off of Ning.

Here is the full post along with a growing number of comments.

I will be interested to see how this plays out and the ultimate impact on this site. Thanks to the ongoing generosity of OmniUpdate, we do not use the free version of Ning. I don't expect radical change to Ning's pricing structure and I am hopeful that OmniUpdate's support will continue.

We now have almost 3200 members and over 13,000 unique visitors per month. This site has grown into a valuable resource to many in the higher education web community and I have no intention of having this valuable resource disappear.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to share them below.

I'm drinking tea out of my mug provided by OmniUpdate and using the website through their contribution, so thanks to them.

I have no concerns going forward, but if hosting with Ning ever does become a problem, we should take a look at the new Drupal Gardens service. With a little work it could provide the same functionality, most likely for free, or with one of their basic plans which are quite cheap. I'd be happy to help do the conversion if it ever came to that.
In light of the recent Ning announcement, I want to assure UWEBD members that OmniUpdate will continue to fully support UWEBD, thereby allowing the group’s social network to remain on Ning. This site has become an invaluable resource for all web developers at institutions around the globe, and OmniUpdate is pleased to be able to play a part in its growth.

I'd like to also personally thank Mark for all his efforts to promote and shepherd the growth of this wonderful resource. Mark is the real hero, and we owe a big thank you to him!

Thank you OmniUpdate and thank you Mark! Wouldn't want to lose the valuable resource.
I'd also like to thank OmniUpdate. So much great information here.
Is Google Ads an option? Is there a way to sell ad space that would translate to enough cash to offset Ning Premium?

Here, here - thank you Omni Update!
Can someone list what the current pricing for Ning is?
I'm also interested in knowing how much Ning currently costs because it has some ramifications for some projects at Penn State. Is it $24.95/month?
Here is the current pricing for Ning Premium services:
