I currently manage the Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter pages for Sinclair Community College (
www.sinclair.edu), located in Dayton, OH. I have been working on an idea in which we would ask students to submit pictures to us for our Picture of the Day. The photo will be uploaded to our Facebook, Myspace and Twitter accounts.
I am trying to find the best way to allow students to submit photos easily. I am also exploring the legal issues we may encounter. For example, does everyone in the photo have to consent in order for us to post it on social media outlets and/or our website?
I’ve only been able to find a handful of schools that allow students to submit photos for social media purposes. Ohio State allows users to submit photos to their site, but “reserves the right to reproduce all images.” See Add Your Image at
www.osu.edu/O-H-I-O/. Juniata College has a Weekly Photo Contest (
http://www.juniata.edu/life/photocontest/) where users submit photos using Flickr. They have set up a Flickr Group for this purpose (
http://www.flickr.com/groups/juniataphoto/).

Another option I have been considering is allowing Facebook fans to upload photo submissions directly to our wall. While this would be easy, more risks are involved.
Has anyone set up, or tried to set up, something similar? At what point, if any, would we become legally responsible for an offensive photo?
