Hi all - I'm pulling together a report for our office on using social media in emergency communications situations in higher ed.

Have any of your institutions included specific details on this topic in your
emergency/crisis communications plans?

I’ve begun to experiment with the best ways of deploying and using the
following social media tools in an emergency comms scenario.

 

-          Monitoring tools (Monitter, Advanced Twitter Search, Backtweets, Google Alerts, etc)


-          Messaging tools (Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc)

 

I’m interested to know:

 

-          Are there other good tools/services you plan to use?


-          Have other universities and colleges written social media into their overall crisis comms plans?


-          How many people in your comms and/or web team would be involved in social media efforts during an emergency scenario? How do
you plan to organize yourselves?

 

Appreciate your thoughts. I’m also happy to share my findings.

We actually talked about this earlier this month and have stated in our emergency guide that our official Facebook page will be included in our emergency notification proceedures. Things posted on our FB page post to our Twitter account, so it will be available there too.
Thanks Jenny. Interesting to see the different "routes" people are using to push out messages (such as your eg of linking FB to Twitter). I'm currently testing several "RSS to Twitter" and "RSS to Facebook" tools to try to figure out what's the quickest "route" to get emergency notifications that are posted on our dedicated alert website (our number #1 priority for such messages) out to FB, Twitter, etc automatically.
