PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The Web Developer will work closely with the Web Strategy team and other stakeholders across campus to define, create, and implement Wheaton’s digital presence. The incumbent is responsible for the front-end development of the college’s primary websites, as well as managing the software needed to create and maintain those sites. The Web Developer will also work with other Wheaton technical staff to see that all of the college’s web-based services are coordinated and delivered in a technically sensible and compatible manner.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

1. Lead the front-end development effort for Wheaton’s primary websites and online tools. Translate wireframes and visual design into functional web and mobile pages.  

2. Technical management of software used to manage our digital presence, including our content management system, email-marketing platform, search services, portal software, mobile applications, and web servers.

3. Lead the evaluation of the functionality and performance of that software infrastructure, and research alternative solutions as needed.
4. Serve as the security administrator for the college’s primary web site, internal web portal, content management system, and related services, including the management of user accounts and permissions.

5. Monitor activity on the primary web sites and services and take needed action to maintain and improve service levels. 
6. Partner with IT staff to respond to attacks, viruses and other threats to the college’s network and internet-based services.

7. Provide technical support as needed to stakeholders responsible for updating and maintaining college web sites.
8. Promote and participate in the creation of standards and guidelines to aid faculty, staff, students, and external vendors in maintaining quality in web content and design.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Coordinate web-related technical activities of people across campus who contribute to the college’s web efforts and initiatives.

Provide assistance in directing student employees as needed.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge and Skills

1. Expertise in designing, developing, and managing all aspects of a large organization's web infrastructure, including web servers, search services, web database services, and content management systems. Technical expertise with configuring, maintaining and developing in a Linux/Apache/MySQL (LAMP) environment. Ability to write clean, standardized code.

2. Experience with WordPress development, including custom themes and plugins is preferred.

3. Familiarity with one or more of these areas is desirable: Apache, MySQL, jQuery, HTML5, XML/JSON, mobile/responsive web design, front-end development tools (Adobe Suite), Banner, Luminis, social media and collaboration tools.

4. Strong experience with content management systems, WordPress strongly preferred

5. Played a critical role in at least one major website redesign

6. Some understanding of user-experience best practices

-       Think strategically and work independently, with a strong attention to detail.

-       Explain technical issues to non-technical users.

-       Exceptional organizational skills, including experience in managing multiple projects simultaneously.

-       Apply independent judgment when necessary.

-       Expert user and active explorer of technology.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:

Education/Experience: BA required or relatable experience, or the equivalent educational and/or student service/higher education experience.

Other Preferences:

- Familiarity with search-engine optimization

- Familiarity with analytics software
