Hello all,
Wondering how many members host their college web sites in house and how many contract the services of an external host? What factors lead to your decision? If you host your site in house, who does the server maintenance- yourself/someone on your web team or a network person?
Thanks in advance for your response(s).

Our Website is hosted internally. We have an IT person who maintains it, but I help occasionally with troubleshooting etc.
Internal. Our computing information department hosts the web servers, CMS and database servers, as well the development servers.
We host ourselves including server configuration/maintenance/etc. I'm a one-man-show.
When I first started with Denver Seminary, everything was hosted internally, and the entire site -- from design to content to server management -- was handled by 2 men on our IT team. When I came on board and the president and two VPs requested that the website be moved to the communications department, IT requested that they also no longer have responsibility for maintaining the servers, so we moved the hosting off-campus. Content is managed mostly by me, but our hosting, and therefore server maintenance, is handled by the web developer who created our CMS. As we are a small institution (around 1000 students), this has worked really well for us.
Personally, I'm not a fan of offsite hosting for colleges. We have the iron and pipes to host our own site, and if something is wrong, I want to be able to physically get to the machine's the site's on. Now, it's one thing if you're using a service like OmniUpdate, where hosting the site is basically part of the tool and package, but to just decide you'll outsource the hosting just because? No thank you. I think that long term that limits your options, makes it harder to expand, and puts you at greater risk, as you have to stand on the shoulders of someone else. If the problem is that your IT infrastructure can't handle it, outsourcing hosting doesn't fix the problem.
Website hosting in house. We do have a couple of apps that are hosted on the outside. For example, HR uses a specialized HR software app. This app resides on that company's server. We just link to that. I am working with the athletic department for their new site and it will also be housed externally. But the main site is in house.
