By and large, I think this was pretty spot on, and if anything, could have been even more poignant. It's a great thing when someone involved in academia, but not us, and not the type of person we normally are responsible for supporting, points out the absurdity in a lot of what we do. By and large, the Twitter discussion that followed this comic was positive, supporting the fact that we really do a lot of things that aren't necessarily aimed at supporting our users' actual needs.

The thing is, I think most people can respect Randall Munroe. I'm not personally a huge fan of his strip, but I'd be lying if there wasn't one every now and then that I printed off and hung in the office (this will be added to the collection). He's sharp and savvy, and like it or not, as a generalization his view of our situation was pretty dang accurate.

CLC is redesigning from server up. What setup is popular today? CMS is one, .NET paired with Visual Studio is another, any others?

Check out this big list of Drupal using universities: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/pub?key=0AnN5FWMlt7YEdGlsVFpBTFNjYU1SbVhPRV85VkdWbWc&output=html The list owner is Jay Collier and it is a publicly editable Google spreadsheet.

Great Drupal site design and flow, Tom! How many people (FTE) are you using to support that Drupal install? We're looking at Acquia hosting.(Aside: My friend Amanda is a widwife who graduated from Bastyr last year -- she was our doula.)

To support large-scale Drupal use, suggest looking at Aegir project http://community.aegirproject.org/notebook "Aegir is a powerful hosting system that sits alongside a LAMP or LEMP server to create, deploy and manage Drupal sites. Once Aegir…

Hi Tom, I'm not sure if you've made the call on this already, but we just build our new site (www.bastyr.edu) in Drupal, and quite happy with it. It integrates well with our CRM (civiCRM), and they seem to roll out pretty swift upgrades.

Web Redesign RFP

We're working through a web redesign project and want to develop an RFP to bring in outside help for this project (information architecture, design, and implementation). Would anyone be willing to share RFPs you've used, recommend any agencies that you've worked with, and give any advice on pitfalls to avoid in this process? Anyone who's done this, would you also be willing to share the scope and cost of your project? Thanks,CarmenWeb Architect/DeveloperCollege of Lake…See More

Unfortunately, I have not. But it's a case of: even if it's not perfect, we might very well have the brain power necessary here to improve it to meet our needs.
