I noticed Knowibility is now offering AccessWorks Usability and Accessibility Testing.

Anyone here tried it?

Suggestions on best tool for evaluating how accessible a site is include pdf, word docs, video? I'm gearing up for a year of improving accessibility on our College and School web site.

I'm also interested in hearing what others are doing for accessibility testing tools. Working on a redesign and accessibility testing will be coming up soon.

At our university there is a center that is dedicated to helping students with learning disabilities and other physical disabilities, and we were lucky enough to work with them and set up some user tests with students who use screen readers and other assistive technologies.  If you have the opportunity I would highly suggest watching someone use your site with a screen reader like JAWS.  Just watching them for a few minutes gave us a ton of valuable insight.  As web developers we can understand and implement the Section 508 recommendations and use accessibility evaluation tools, but seeing users first-hand really brings these concepts to light.

With my eyes. I'm not being snarky, I realistically find anything that scanners and tools can find, I can account for programatically with my CMS, and everything else requires human vetting anyway. And I just assume that if it's not something that I created, more than likely it has accessibility problems, unless it's just plain text.

How much do you stay away from PDFs? I understand they can be made accessible, but that it can be time consuming.

It's impossible. There's no way I could stop people from posting them, and those that do wouldn't know the first thing about making them accessible. We have over 5000 non-HTML content items on the site, 4700 are PDFs.

Yikes. I'm trying to develop a more accessible site and am not sure how to tackle this. I have little time and zero resources to create hundreds or thousands of pdfs to html equivalents or even tag pdfs appropriately. It's a full-time job. So, which approach do you suggest? Control what you can and let all else fly?
