Regarding the first category mentioned by Richard, public events
calendars, there was a long discussion on this list back in late
November 2007 of potential alternatives. Based solely on comments in
that thread (and taking them at face value :), the systems that were
mentioned - and this is by no means a complete list - included:

We are part of University Communications and are looking for a tool or product to take in job requests, project requests, etc. Would prefer something that allows a feedback survey that asks for client satisfaction upon job completion. What are you using? What do you like about it?See More
