And there may also be a third category: industrial-strength,
enterprise-class scheduling systems, exemplified by products such as
Dean Evans & Associates' EMS series.

Regarding the first category mentioned by Richard, public events
calendars, there was a long discussion on this list back in late
November 2007 of potential alternatives. Based solely on comments in
that thread (and taking them at face value :), the systems that were
mentioned - and this is by no means a complete list - included:

Open source, university- or university consortium-developed:

Bedework (consortium-developed, based on UW Calendar from the
University of Washington)
Used by some ~15 universities
Info: http://www.bedework.org/bedework/
Examples: http://www.bedework.org/bedework/update.do?artcenterkey=35

University of California, Berkeley Events Calendar
Being investigated by some other University of California campuses
Info: http://www.berkeley.edu/news/berkeleyan/2007/01/17_calendar.shtml
Example: http://events.berkeley.edu

UNL Event Publisher (University of Nebraska-Lincoln)
Used by at least several universities
Info: http://www1.unl.edu/wdn/wiki/UNL_Event_Publisher
Example: http://events.unl.edu/

VTCalendar (aka "VT Calendar" or "VT Cal") (Virginia Tech)
Used by a number of universities
Info: http://vtcalendar.sourceforge.net/
Example: http://www.calendar.vt.edu/main.php
With at least one standards-compliant modification, perhaps done at Kent State:
Example: http://www.ursuline.edu/vtcalendar/main.php

Bedework is written in Java, while the other three above are PHP-based.

Commercial:

Active Data Calendar (Active Data Exchange)

Trumba Connect
Info: http://www.trumba.com/

From Luke Robinson, Calvin College:
Adding onto Aron's list, another commercial calendar option:

CollegeNET R25 WebViewer
Info: http://corp.collegenet.com/depts/higher_ed/series/WebViewer/
Examples: http://www.google.com/search?q=R25+WebViewer
