Any suggestions about where to find information about range of website redesign costs? People I might contact?

I redesigned the entire site for Auxiliary Services at UNC Charlotte. The cost is probably in the $3,000 range, but it depends on all it entails. You can see a before and after here: http://www.varloodesign.com/web-design/web-design-aux.php

Yeah, $3,000 is about right from my experience, for a small business-specific site with two or three page/section templates
I think that the cost might range widely depending on everything that is involved. Is it simply a redesign? to freshen the look? Will you move to or update a CMS platform? Do you need to integrate with other systems to offer your users greater capability via the web site? Are there pages that require a variation on the design? There is also varying amounts of consultation that could be involved to help your school zero in on your particular audience, e.g., what are your schools' prospects looking for, where do they come from, etc. as opposed to other schools and what helps your school stand out among its competitors.

The scope of the project needs to be sketched out so that you can compare apples to apples in terms of cost.
1. Provide an effective architecture
2. Develop a wire frame for each major sector to guide the development of content
3. Provide the content for up to 150 pages
4. Develop a set of design formats
5. Guide Web Services through content migration
6. Provide training for key web managers who can train others after implementation
Great. I would look at web development agencies or collectives, not a single designer, since you'll need competencies in organization, development, design and content development/writing. And the cost would probably be more in the tens of thousands of dollars.
Yep, something this huge would be out of the scope of a single person, unless you hire a FT staff and let them develop a social media strategy etc for after the site launch as well. But you'd still be better off with a firm doing the initial consulting and design, and then hiring somebody to implement it and do the content development and training.
