Hey everyone, I thought I'd share a helpful RedDot blog. It's got some useful plugins/extensions and articles geared towards RedDot. Check it out: Unofficial RedDot CMS blog

Hi Everyone,

We're getting ready to start implementation of RedDot CMS and LiveServer in January 2009, and am curious if anyone would be willing to share any best practices or experience with any of the following:

Training: we're scheduled to take CMS Project Manager, CMS Project Builder, CMS System Administrator, LiveServer Administrator, LiveServer CMS Project Builder--any tips or things to consider about training?

Staff size for implementation: curious to know how big/small your implementation teams were/are, what roles and responsibilities were/are?

Strategy: how did you approach project and set scope? Did you convert existing site in pieces or in one fell swoop?

Content modeling: we have been doing an existing site audit to identify templates, content types and components. Any advice or best practices you found for modeling content for RedDot?

LiveServer: Has anyone implemented it? What is level of effort?

Portals: Has anyone used RedDot as a portal or have you combined with student-faculty intranet? Any experiences working with it and PeopleSoft?

In general, things you know now that you wish you knew then?

Many thanks for any thoughts on any of these questions. As we go through our implementation I'll share our experiences.

Yeah, I'm worried about the text editor when we release this for everyone to use. Do you have the code view blocked, or is it available for everyone to modify? I'm just wondering how "locked down" we really need to make our text editor settings.

We've been using RedDot for a few years now and the text editor has been problematic for our users. From what I recall, Version 8 is supposed to allow you to drop in your own WYSIWYG editor.

Hey Guys,

We are still implementing RedDot, but for the most part its going pretty well. The training class we did was nice, but looking back, it was just the tip of the iceberg. I learned so much more the week that RedDot came here and helped us setup the basics of our site.

The hardest things for me have been setting up the navigation (I had RedDot do most of this work :P), and setting up workflows. The workflows are more tedious than anything. Once you get the hang of it, it's not bad...you just hope that there aren't many layers of approval. I would definitely say to keep them simple, and then change them later if it is a problem.

Anybody else? How has your experience been with RedDot? We have not released it for our faculty/staff to modify yet, and my big concern is how they are going to deal with the text editor. Every time I'm in there, I seem to need to go into the source view to fix things.

Hi John,

Am curious how your implementation of RedDot went or is going. We are preparing to begin implementation in January 2009. Any learnings or best practices you'd be willing to share? Any RedDot training you went through and thoughts on that?

Hey, John. Chris Nixon at University of Arkansas is hosting a listserv for education users of RedDot. That's probably the best place to get ideas.

I'm sure he'd be happy to add you to the list.

We're about to implement RedDot here and in a couple weeks we will have the initial training. Are there any suggestions from any current users for questions or topics I should pay specific attention to?

Have you looked at http://www.thindata.com/ and http://www.campaignmonitor.com? Not sure if they offer everything that you are looking for but their emails are well designed in my opinion.
