Hi Ed, I don't think this is the place to discuss this but I had the exact same troubles in 2.7 and it was fixed in 2.8. Obviously you need to 777 the folder, but also make sure the 2.8 update updated all the files and make sure you don't have a slash at the end of the path in your settings!

Does it make any difference if I host it in a secure (https) portion of the server? That's where it is.

First of all, I didn't see an uploads folder within wp-content. I created one with write permissions. Still getting the IO Error message.
Adam Norwood Comment by Adam Norwood on July 6, 2009 at 3:37pm
I was about to say the same thing as Eric -- check out the Changing File Permissions page for more info. Failing that, what's the error message that you're getting?
Eric Comment by Eric on July 6, 2009 at 3:32pm
Have you checked that your web server has write permissions to /wp-content/uploads/?

Same problem after upgrading to v2.8.
Ed Welch Comment by Ed Welch on July 6, 2009 at 9:03am
I installed Wordpress on our server to accommodate some faculty-contributed content. I'm using v 2.7, which was installed on our production server (MediaTemple dedicated virtual server). Doing test posts seems to check out okay, but I can't seem to upload images. When attempting to use the java feature I get an IO error message. Using the manual upload nothing happens. Any ideas of where I can check? Perhaps something on the server side? I'm fairly new to wordpress.
