Okay, who's thinking about (or has done in the past) using WordPress for something other than blogging. I'm thinking about using it for news article gathering and publishing on our web site. Anyone else?
Thanks Mike. To get the main functionality I was going for, I made a custom plugin. This adds custom fields that we can modify and use for different types of posts.
Other plugins are NextGen Gallery, Share This, wordTube (modified slightly), WordPress.com Popular Posts, and WP-Email.
Thanks, everyone for your replies. This helps me out a lot, since I like WP for its versatility, and its nice admin module. I'll be looking into using it as a news tool for a couple of my sites...
We currently use WP for some minisites such as those for conferences. It will be one of the platforms we consider when it comes to updating our main site. We are also publishing teaching guides using the commentpress theme http://www.futureofthebook.org/commentpress/.
Have you found that people catch on to what commentpress is doing? I showed it off in my office and found that people were very confused until we walked through it a little.
Colleagues *seemed* to grasp what was going on - I gave them this example http://interactive.dius.gov.uk/innovationnation/ - it will be interesting to see if our community likes the format and uses it.
My presentation for HighEdWeb includes a download for a complete departmental site using the Mimbo theme. It's very much just a demo :) but it includes news, job listings (sort of), a staff directory (sort of), and an email newsletter via Feedburner.
A few questions on using WP and Feedburner for college newsletters:
Are you just using the feedburner email delivery system to notify users of additional content added to an online newsletter? We currently use the standard send an html email out whenever a new newsletter is produced. Do you find using feedburner a more effective delivery system?
Why I ask, is that we are currently looking to re-vamp our newsletter and I am looking at new and fresh alternatives.
BuddyPress is now in beta. I've been watching its development for a while and it looks fascinating. It's a set of plugins and templates for WordPressMU that turns the blogging platform into a social network.
Has anyone tried it yet? I installed an earlier copy but got sidetracked before I'd done much with it.
I avoid US based servers for personal information, and try to keep all PII on-campus or at least on Canadian servers. The requesting IP number in GA data could be personally identifying in some cases, but I'm not very concerned.
