Hi Julie, I use a plugin (https://wordpress.org/plugins/page-links-to/) to set up simple page redirects. Using it at our root site to link to a deep page or an external page gives a 'short-ish' URL. brescia.uwo.ca/give/ is an example that leads to an external (non-WordPress) form.

However, now that you raise the question, I see that there is another plugin that looks like it does exactly what you want! (https://wordpress.org/plugins/shorten-url/)
