We have data to measure activity on SM sites as a result of using callouts, but it's mostly for internal use. We just share this data for others to do what they will with it. :) Be sure to see Ann White's research at OK Christian, stellar stuff.

I'm not sure if my college's homepage is ready for icons. However, I'll propose links in the news items and see how that would work.
It's just a numbers game. First we determine what the measurable goals of the site are and how much each goal is worth. Then we take what a student is "worth" and the conversion rate from goal to student.

Brad, could you explain the methodology for figuring out what a visitor to one's site is worth?
There is a hefty amount of high res images in there, and it seems to load pretty quickly. May lose some people in those 2-3 seconds, though.
