"Very good points, and in general I agree.
Here at Brescia we identified a 'test use case' for QR: When students pile off the bus from main campus, they all have smartphone in hand, so we created a simple 'Daily Brescia' web…"
"To be honest, I have yet to see a QR Code which has enhanced my life, as a user. It's easier to find bad examples of QR codes than good ones. (A railway station in Bristol replaced all the timetables on platforms with QR Codes, so you could…"
"With the usual caveats about not constituting legal advice, etc., I feel confident about using QR codes here in Canada without any particular concern over legal issues. With regards to this specific lawsuit you could always link to the full URL, and…"
Came across an interesting story on the BBC today: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-23898080"Patent trolls take out generalised patents, often on widely available technology, and then demand money from companies who use or offer it. Shops and restaurants have been targeted for displaying QR codes and online store-locators...." After which I tried to find out what the QR Code issue was. Which led me to this blog post:…See More
Thanks for your response! It's very useful to have somoe links to look at and an insight into the different experiences and perspectives at the universities you mention.
I've heard of elgg before, and…"
"At our small affiliate university, we focus on using external social media sites for student conversations, based on the 'be where people already are' approach. Facebook Groups are our key conversational spaces, and are very active.
Hello I work on the content provision and editorial area for a student portal at a university in the UK - Glamlife. Our portal has a lively and active classifieds board, and a presence on Facebook and Twitter (where we feed out stories, and respond to students if they comment / have queries), but that is pretty much the extent of our social provisions. Some modules in Blackboard will have their own, module-specific discussion boards, but our impression is that these are not necessarily highly…See More
Hello I am one of the admins of our student portal's Facebook public profile (https://www.facebook.com/uniglamlife) and our Twitter account (https://twitter.com/glamlife). A while ago, I set things up so our Facebook updates syndicate out to our Twitter account. I believe I set this up in Facebook, but for the life of me, I cannot find where that setting is at the moment. Not sure whether that's due…See More
"I would support using LinkedIn for this group (and have confirmed that I am a member over there). Generally I follow highered topics/people on twitter, but long-range/complicated discussions are impossible on that platform. A combo of…"
"Emergency Alerts for OU Campus allows you to communicate with students, staff, and the community with custom website announcements. When time matters most, make sure your website is the go-to place for info."
"This is the first time I have been here in a long time. Selfishly, I would hope that you would be able to continue the site, but I understand realities. As I re-acquaint myself, I'm seeing a lot of value in what you have tirelessly built.…"
"Hi Mark, in line with many others who have posted, first a big thank you for providing this resource for so many years. I was a keen reader of it and occasional poster a good few years ago. And I loved my Website Hero mug until I dropped it and had…"
"I was a recent addition and did not find too much activity here that I could leverage but LinkedIn does seem to be the logical destination. Perhaps there is interest here and you can crowd source the migration. Migrating the content could…"
"I would be very sorry to see this resource go. I am just a one person shop at my college and feel quite a alone as far as anyone understanding the complexity of what I do. It's a wonderful thing to see people facing the same challenges I face…"
"I wouldn't feel necessary to stick with Ning if the cost isn't a burden. Facebook, LinkedIn, and Slack are all satisfactory options in my opinion. Slack is a great option for more instant communication, and you'll probably find a lot…"
"Thank you Mark, this has been an invaluable resource - particularly for seeing how our cohorts at other institutions approach the problems we all face.
But, as many people have said today, I haven't visited in a while. I think that's…"
"Regardless of where this goes, Mark, thanks for setting it up and running it all these years!
I find it quite useful myself, lurking mostly, but occasionally joining in where it might help us, or I might be able to provide value. I like having this…"
"OK, I give up. I am at Texas A&M, and @tamu.edu is not listed among those allowed to create userids. Can someone either (1) add TAMU.EDU or (2) send me an invitation to uwebd slack? (email@example.com).
I agree that the paid Ning site may have outlived its usefulness in light of other group media apps. Like many have stated, Slack and FaceBook / LinkedIn groups. are good options. Slack may not have as much adoption as FB or LI yet.
"If you decide to leave Ning, please consider as an additional place to have this discussion group at no cost, the GROUPS.IO discussion group network which is free and of a very high quality. It also provides a wiki to those who have discussion…"
