I think Ning is fine. The big problem (to me) is not in creating features, it's in finding a good platform for people to want to interact, post questions and participate in the network.

Every time you use javascript for interaction there should be a no-script solution. This one of the major principles in progressive enhancement.

"Employment at SJC" is a link in our footer that is on every page, including the homepage. We also have a prominent link in the navigation one level down under our "About Us" section. It's one of our top hits also.
