Unfortunately, Pima Community College will always be associated with mass shooter Jared Lee Loughner. While the horrific incident didn't take place on their campus, it does remind us that any public space can be violated and that every organization needs an emergency action plan.
An Emergency Action Plan isn't just a nice-to-have. It's required by OSHA standards [29 CFR 1910.38(a)].http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/etools/evacuation/eap.html
How often does your college review their emergency action plan?
You can't just set it and forget it. It requires regular review, and then regular drills so that it's second nature to your organization.
Expand the plan to provide multiple methods of communication.
And, once you get the basics down, how can you expand it? For example, if the physical campus needed to be closed for an extended period of time is there a way classes could continue? Begin by having a syllabus for every class, available online.
