We are thinking of moving from a more coimplex CMS to a more easy to use system. We are currently looking at OmniUpdate and CommonSpot. Has anyone had experience with either of these CMS? I would appreciate any reviews or feedback from users.
To clearify, OmniUpdate doesn't host the client's target website(s).
OmniUpdate offers two deployment options for the CMS app:
1) An On-demand (Software as a Service) solution that publishes files to the target web server via FTP or SFTP.
2) On-site -- installed on a dedicated server at the institution.
Most clients prefer option 1 because there is one less server to maintain.
We have been a OmniUpdate developer (use OmniUpdate as part of our website redesign services for our college clients) for over 5 years. We find them to be the most responsive CMS vendor to client and partner feature requests. They are about to launch Version 8 of their CMS (publicly announced already) at the end of April. Among many new features and refinements are several dozen features that have been added specifically from client requests. They are going to have a webcast demoing all the new features of version 8 posted to their site (www.omniupdate.com) at the end of the first week of April.
It has been a long time since I reviewed Common Spot (and have not installed it as part of a college site redesign yet), so I can't help with a comparison, but I can help you with any questions you have about OmniUpdate as we have installed and configured it as part of over a dozen client website redesigns.
I've been using OmniUpdate for at least four years now (it might be longer... I can't recall off-hand) and I offer their product my highest recommendation. We were the second State University of New York (SUNY) campus to sign a contract with that, but first to use their hosted model. (SUNY Oswego hosts OmniUpdate locally on their campus and was the first to sign with them.) A few months ago SUNY System Administration in Albany (host to all 64 SUNY campuses) signed a system-wide contract for OmniUpdate, offering incredible deals for any of the 64 campuses to use OmniUpdate.
We are thrilled to not have to host it locally - and I'm usually a big proponent of hosting anything locally that we can. Other than a few planned, brief, scheduled outages over the years I've used this product, we've never noticed any downtime or downsides to having it hosted on their servers.
The end users on our campus LOVE it. In fact, we have more users with accounts than I ever imagined we'd get to, because of its ease of use, flexibility, and scalability.
