We (web professionals) all know that our college Web site should reflect what a user (students) expects and not our internal structure, right? In other words if I am a student looking for the Counseling Center operating hours, I am logically just going to look for "counseling" perhaps under "current students', quick links or some other student orientated page.
Our internal structure places the Counseling department under the Dean of Enrollment and Student Services (ESS). The ESS folks have noticed that there is a link to "counseling" instead of "ESS". They are pushing (hard) for the link to be changed to ESS because counseling is under ESS and everyone (including students) will just know that....sigh....
How do you handle these types of requests (changing navigation which is geared toward a user's needs and not the College's internal structure)? Do you know of any resources that I can point folks to that will explain this concept?
