Are any of you serving Drupal sites with the same login authentication that you use for your portals or other web apps? We use CAS and LDAP and hoping to use that for our Drupal as well, rather than keeping local profile databases. What are you using and what is your experience? Were you able to use OTS Drupal modules or did you need to customize? Thanks!

We customized the pubcookie module:

http://drupal.org/project/pubcookie

We're using pubcookie in most of our webapps for quasi-single sign on. We've had it running for ~3 years now in drupal. Overall it's worked out well. Our customizations are relatively minor, and not all to the module itself, some were to accommodate how we're using it. For example we store the URL when the user clicks on a login/out link so we can send them back to it after the login/out, we changed the 403 so it redirects them to login, and a few other minor things along those lines.
Interesting. So if you have, say 6 people that are allowed to be editors for a particular Drupal site, do you give them that status individually or do you manage it with a group (like LDAP)? And I'm assuming those 6 would sign in through pubcookie authentication for their elevated rights as well.
We ended up building our own module to handle the notion of groups and to manage access control. Each user is granted access to the site via their pubcookie login, and their ability to read/edit/create is managed via the module we wrote. Permissions are very granular and can be granted either to individuals, groups, or both. The groups themselves can be dynamically generated from data (ie in your example, via ldap groups) or other data sources - in our case we're a Datatel campus so we build a lot of our groups via tables fed in from Datatel (all students, all faculty, all alums, students enrolled in a given course, etc etc).

We only run one Drupal instance. For your example, we'd likely build a group either from institutional data (ie all members of a given department) or we'd create a group, populate it, and hand it over to someone in the group to maintain.

There's a ~10 minute screencast covering how this works if you're curious:

https://www.amherst.edu/mm/56945

It's a bit out of date at this point but still covers the major aspects of what the module we wrote delivers. There's also a writeup over on groups.drupal.org that goes into a bit more depth, also out of date but still accurate in the main. That's here:

http://groups.drupal.org/node/10231

There are a couple of other schools running this now. The main downside to what we've done is that we had to touch Drupal core. We'll be out of core when Drupal 7 ships, at which point our module will be available in Drupal contrib.
Fabulous - thanks for all the info! We have Banner / CAS instead of Datatel / Pubcookie, but at least the ideas are similar. I'll take a look at those resources. Thanks so much.
Sure thing, you're welcome. Best of luck with your implementation.

Griffith University is interested in using SAML and Shibboleth authenticaion for Drupal websites to allow it to integrate with other Australian universities and with other web resources at Griffith university using a single sign-on.

Has anyone else done this, or is anyone interested in collaborating to implement this capability?

SAML and Shibboleth are becoming the technologies of choice for research collaboration around the globe, so we want to use a technology that will be widely supported and interoperable in the future.

I just came across this information. http://www.io1.biz/externalfeeds/items/saml-and-drupal

Archived magazine stories

Greetings,What are you all doing online with "old" magazine stories? Do you delete issues after so  many years? 5 years? 10? I'm torn between keeping all on for historical purposes or keeping just a few years online to simplify the site (ala Gerry McGovern.) Curious as to what you see best practices being.ThanksSara KisseberthBluffton Universitywww.bluffton.eduSee More
