I am hoping to find some solutions to on going issue we are having with Ektron and performance with Firefox. When browsing our site in Firefox, pages are often loading extremely slow or timing out all together. This just happens in Firefox, both PC and Mac.

One solution we were considering is to separate our database and web pages to separate servers. Currently they are both on the same box. How is your Ektron site set up? Have you seen this same issue with Firefox?

The new version of Firebug, if open, will cause Firefox to run slowly. Close Firebug to run faster.
Doug - I appreciate the reply, but this has been an issue ever since we launched ektron over a year ago. Another support person at ektron also recently asked me to install firebug and run it to try and diagnosis the issue.
Did the NET tab in Firebug show any server requests that took an exceptionally long time to load? The IIS logs may show one or more files taking a long time to download. As you probably know, changes to the ASPX or web.config cause .NET to recompile the site, which times significant time.

Are browser cache settings different for FF than IE and Safari? How about browser add-ons?
Browser cache settings on the server or individual machines? It's not just happening to me, I get calls campus wide about it. I'm not super IT savvy. Can cache settings for server be set up?

Firebug didn't show anything unusual.
A LiveMeeting session with Ektron support might be needed to collect the timing data for FF and IE to analyze the differences. There are differences between FF and IE in the way the CMS editor works, but very little different for a site page. My theory is some FF add-on that's common on your campus, but more information is needed to determine a more precise cause.

Server cache would affect all browsers equally.
Hi Christine,

Just curious is you have looked at the servers log files, statistics or monitoring software (to analyze CPU, memory, disks, network, load & uptime and processes etc) that may possibly give you a clue as to where the performance may be lagging...

I think moving the DB to another server is probably a good idea regardless.

How does it perform in IE? Does FF have the same effect on both Mac AND PC platforms?

/Gregg
Hi Gregg,

Yes it happens on both platforms for FF. In IE and Safari it performs fine. That's why the issue is so perplexing.

We have looked at our server logs and the others but can't find anything that stands out as an Ah Ha!.

We are likely going to separate the DB to another server. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Christine
Our developer wants to know if it true for all pages or just those being fed through smart form?
Hi Brian,

It's true for all pages.
Could you send us a link to one of the slow pages so we can test on our FF?
You can really go to any page and browse around. The other issue with this is that it is very sporadic. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. Since I'm on the site all day approving content, I see it all the time. Our web address is http://www.ut.edu

Thank you for taking the time.
Everything seems to load quickly on our end. Will test throughout the date and let you know if we experience any delays.

Archived magazine stories

Greetings,What are you all doing online with "old" magazine stories? Do you delete issues after so  many years? 5 years? 10? I'm torn between keeping all on for historical purposes or keeping just a few years online to simplify the site (ala Gerry McGovern.) Curious as to what you see best practices being.ThanksSara KisseberthBluffton Universitywww.bluffton.eduSee More
